Why you'll love this recipe
Traditional garlic aioli requires slowly whisking olive oil into a mixture of minced garlic, egg yolks, and lemon juice. It's a fun experience, but it's a lot of work.
For this recipe, we'll be taking a quick and easy shortcut and use mayonnaise as a base. By doing this, we'll be saving a ton of time- and a ton of effort!
Whether you're looking for a zesty sauce for grilled chicken or a tasty dip for zucchini bites, this naturally gluten-free garlic aioli sauce recipe is sure to satisfy your cravings.
What is aioli?
Aioli is a garlic and olive oil emulsion that came from the Mediterranean- specifically Spain, France, and Italy.
This mayonnaise-based sauce is infused with the pungent flavors of garlic and lemon juice, and is commonly served with a variety of dishes, such as seafood, grilled vegetables, and meats.
Whether used as a dip, spread, or a dressing, garlic aioli adds a burst of flavor to any meal!
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients you'll need to make the best garlic aioli:
- Mayonnaise. Using a mayonnaise base makes this sauce so much easier to make compared the traditional version- and it's a real time-saver!
- Garlic cloves. This is the star of the show in garlic aioli and adds the distinct and robust flavor we all love.
- Lemon. Adds a bright freshness to the aioli, as well as balances out the richness of the mayo and the sharpness of the garlic.
- Kosher salt* and pepper. These seasonings add flavor and depth to the sauce.
*This recipe is made using kosher salt. If you want to use table salt, you will need to use less.
Step-by-step instructions
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, minced garlic, and lemon juice. Stir the mixture well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Add salt and pepper to taste and stir again. I like to do ¼ teaspoon each of kosher salt and pepper.
Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice to suit your preference.
Transfer the garlic aioli spread to a serving dish or container. Refrigerate until you're ready to use.
Tips & tricks
Use a good quality mayonnaise. The mayo you use will affect the overall taste of your aioli. Try to use a high-quality, creamy mayonnaise. My go-to is Hellman's.
Let the flavors meld. After all of the ingredients are mixed together, let the aioli sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour or two. This will allow the flavors to meld and the garlic flavor to infuse into the mayonnaise.
Recommended tools
- Garlic Press. This is my top favorite kitchen tool! I'm no longer stuck with the tedious task of mincing garlic by hand.
Storage
Store homemade garlic aioli in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
