Better than sex poke cake is one of my favorite cakes to bring to work potlucks. It's quick, it's easy, and it's always a crowd pleaser!
It only takes about 15 minutes to throw everything on this cake. Keep in mind it does have a minimum two hour chill time. But the good news is that this cake can be made ahead of time.
This recipe uses a handful of simple and easy to find ingredients. To make the best better than sex cake, you will need:
- Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix (plus ingredients to make the cake)
- Caramel sauce
- Chocolate sauce
- Whipped topping
- English toffee bits
After the cake has been prepared according to package directions, poke holes into the warm cake using either a skewer or a fork. Pour about 10 ounces of caramel sauce onto the cake, reserving 2 ounces for the top. Spread the caramel evenly across the cake. Refrigerate for at least two hours.
Poke holes into the cake while it's still warm. As it cools, the top of the cake will crumble more easily.
After chilling, spread the whipped topping onto the top of the cake. Drizzle with chocolate sauce and remaining caramel sauce. Garnish with English toffee bits or topping of your choice!
Make it ahead of time
Can Better than Sex Cake be made ahead of time?
Yes! The cake actually tastes better when it has time to soak up all of the caramel. Make the cake (up to Step 3) up to two days in advance. Decorate the cake with whipped topping, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, and toffee bits the day you are ready to serve it.
Tips & tricks
Try different cake mixes. My personal favorite is Triple Chocolate Fudge, but chocolate, Devil's Food, and German chocolate could also be used.
Use room temperature caramel sauce and chocolate sauce. If the containers are stored in the refrigerator, it may be hard to drizzle over the cake. Let both of the sauces come to room temperature before drizzling.
Switch it up! Swap out the English toffee bits for crushed nuts, Oreos, Reese's, or your favorite candy bar. I like to switch back and forth between toffee bits and miniature chocolate chips.
- 9x13 Cake Pan. You can also make these into cupcakes!
- Wooden Skewers. This is one of my favorite tools to poke holes into this cake.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
